I have spent more than forty years of my life thread painting for relaxation. While a Registered Nurse by profession, I developed this embroidery technique which relies on long, smooth stitches and intricate shading to produce stunning results through blending threads and colors. I love being able to capture favorite paintings or familiar scenes in thread and view it as an amazing adventure. I will often celebrate special occasions by embroidering a picture to represent it.
The painting I am holding here is Sunday in the Park by Seurat that I completed about ten years ago. I saw the original painting at the Art Institute in Chicago and it took my breath away. I threaded this one free-style after sketching it on cloth. In order to accomplish the shading, I employed pointillism by adding dots on top of dots in appropriate colors. The cloth became very thick and I ended up with a little thumb inflammation, but it was worth it.
An important point about my work is that none of it is done by kit, every one is done by hand and my interpretation of the pieces I am representing.
This work is based upon a photo of younger me wearing this lovely striped hat and I must now bid adieu, now that it is sold.
